Clone Stamp tool helps copy an area of a picture onto another area on the canvas. The tool is often used to remove unwanted objects from the pictures by photographers and designers. For instance, blemishes on people's faces can be covered up by this tool (Copying one part of the skin on to another)  or removing trash from grass (Copying parts of grass over the trash).

Function of the Clone Stamp Tool

Clone Stamp tool allows for some very subtle picture editing. If an image is edited using the brush tool, the area would be flat, lacking dimension, tone, and shade. Thus, making it very obvious and clear to the viewer, which part is edited.

Clone stamp tool copies over a set of pixels over another set of the same as digital pictures comprise of these. This results in the retouched are blending in seamlessly with the rest of the picture. Other Photoshop tools like the Pattern Stamp, the Healing Brush, and the Patch tool all come from the Clone Stamp, hence, if you know how to use one of them, you can use them all.

How to use the tool

  1. Press the Alt key which will cause the cursor to change to a target.

  2. Click the point that you want to use as a sampling point. This becomes the reference point for cloning.

  3. Click and draw at the place where you wish to have the cloned image to appear. When you draw, a cross will appear on the original image while a corresponding circle will be visible where you are drawing.

It takes a little practice for it to become clear how this process works and what is the most suitable way to achieve the best results.

Clone stamp won’t blend pixels like the healing brush tool, this tool gives you full control.

Beginning with easy projects like removing dust spots or  skin imperfections.

Once you get good at this, you can begin to remove objects or even people. Keep an eye out for patterns when you think you’re finished, they make the fact that you have edited something out obvious and it also looks ugly and unnatural.

The Clone Stamp tool saves more pictures than any other tool. If you become good at it, you will be able to remove all those things in your pictures that you don't wish to have.
